Good News
What do you think of when someone says Good News?
Some might think of a friend that lives in another state texting that they are coming to visit this weekend. Others might think about a positive report from a doctor after a medical test. Yet others might think of receiving unexpected money. Each situation could be very different if there was one small change. A friend’s text message about a parent dying. A medical report with negative results. An unexpected bill in the mail. Sometimes one needs to understand or live through bad news to truly appreciate and hold dearly the good news.
In Romans 3:23 what some believe is bad news for the human race is shared:
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23 (ESV)
What is the typical response you might have for someone that shares with you the truth of this verse? Would you be angry with them? Would you think they are being hypocritical? As this verse states, we ALL have sinned, so why should they be sharing this with you? Someone shares this verse with you because they love and care for you. In Exodus 20, God describes ten behavioral statements that would describe a life perfectly in harmony with our creator. If we are honest with we must admit that we have broken several, if not most, of them.
“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” Exodus 20:7 (ESV)
“Honor your father and your mother” Exodus 20:12a (ESV)
“You shall not steal.” Exodus 20:15 (ESV)
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16 (ESV)
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” Exodus 20:17 (ESV)
These are only five truths from God’s word, have you broken one or more of them at least once? If so, then there is some bad news in Romans 3:23 for you. Because we have sinned against the Creator, we fall short of His Glory and we are unable to have fellowship with Him. However, God in his righteousness has provided a payment for our sins. This good news is good in part because of the bad news we have just learned about.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (ESV)
